French Elites Target Morocco
Sept. 5—Having suffered one humiliation after another from their former West African colonies, French elites are now targeting Morocco for destabilization. Earlier in August, France’s newspaper of record, Le Monde, ran a six-part series of slanderous articles targeting King Mohamed VI of Morocco. The articles are a compilation of all the royal gossip of the last decades aimed at discrediting the king.
In a statement, the Moroccan Media Association accurately describes the series: “These articles, which pretend to belong to the genre of ‘investigation,’ participate above all in the genre of gossip...They do not cite sources, report fictitious anecdotes, and construct a narrative that serves an agenda resolutely hostile to the monarchical institution, which is the foundation of the Moroccan nation.”
The North African Post, which is close to the government, described the series as a “striking evidence of this post-colonial chauvinist vision, disconnected from reality.”
Morocco is playing a leading role in Africa’s quest for integration and the fight against neo-colonialism. A full member of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the country has forged ever deeper economic and political cooperation with China, in which the latter is cooperating in key infrastructure projects, including in the high-speed rail and energy sectors, as well as in fertilizer and high-tech industrial parks. Crown Prince Hassan, who officially greeted China’s President Xi Jinping in December 2024 during Xi’s stopover after a visit to South America, has been learning Chinese.
Furthermore, Morocco has developed close relations with the Confederation of Sahel States, comprising Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Led by military governments, all of which have thrown out French military leaders, these three states also threw out French military bases.
