Russia Wants Joint Projects with the U.S.
Aug. 29—Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said in an interview with TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov ahead of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), to be held in Vladivostok Sept. 3-5, that Russia and the U.S. could collaborate in a number of areas, including nuclear energy and metallurgy. He also suggested there could be joint projects involving rare and rare-earth metals, according to TASS. Such collaboration was discussed in principle at the Aug. 15 Anchorage Summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Among the possible projects for collaboration was the construction of the Bering Strait Tunnel/Bridge.
“In traditional industries, there is room for cooperation. For example, Russia could supply uranium for U.S. nuclear fuel production. This also applies to steel. Our president has also mentioned potential collaboration on rare and rare-earth metals,” Manturov said, noting that Russia has significant reserves of rare-earth metals. “Other directions may emerge as we move forward on the topics I have outlined,” he added.
Coverage of the same interview by Reuters emphasized that “Russia hopes that a U.S.-Russian joint venture involving Boeing in the Sverdlovsk region can resume its operations…. The joint venture between Russia’s largest titanium maker VSMPO-AVISMA and U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing halted operations in 2022 after Boeing decided to suspend purchases of titanium from Russia.”
