Trump Allows UN Security Council to Condemn Israeli Attack on Qatar
Sept. 17—The UN Security Council issued a press statement Sept. 11 condemning the Israeli attack on Qatar on Sept. 9. Though it doesn’t name Israel as the attacker, the statement is still characterized in press reports as a remarkable achievement, because the U.S. didn’t veto it this time. Sources report that Israel had pressed President Donald Trump to veto the resolution. These same sources say that Trump effectively told the Israelis and Prime Minister Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu "fuck you." The Wall Street Journal reported today that Trump is furious with Bibi stating that "he is fucking with me."
Here’s the full text of the resolution:
“The members of the Security Council expressed their condemnation of the recent strikes in Doha, the territory of a key mediator, on 9 September. They expressed deep regret at the loss of civilian life.
“Council members underscored the importance of de-escalation and expressed their solidarity with Qatar. They underlined their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar, in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
“Council members recalled their support for the vital role that Qatar continues to play in mediation efforts in the region, and alongside Egypt and the United States.
“Council members underscored that releasing the hostages, including those killed by Hamas, and ending the war and suffering in Gaza must remain our top priority. In this regard, they reiterated the importance of the ongoing diplomatic efforts of Qatar, Egypt and the United States, and called for the parties to seize the opportunity for peace.”
In a separate statement, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told the Council that “the Russian Federation strongly condemns the attack carried out by Israel Sept. 9 against a residential complex in Doha,” reported TASS. “The strike was directed not only at Qatar as a sovereign state uninvolved in the Arab-Israeli conflict but also at the very efforts of mediators to achieve a diplomatic resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It is evident that Israel’s incursion will have the most serious consequences, both for the already catastrophic situation in Gaza and for the security of the broader Middle East region.”
