UN June 2-4 Conference for Lasting Peace in Southwest Asia; Zepp-LaRouche Urges for Oasis Plan
May 7—Following the July 19, 2024, advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which found Israel’s continued occupation of the Palestinian territories (OPT) and East Jerusalem to be “unlawful,” the UN General Assembly Sept. 18, 2024, adopted Resolution A/RES/ES-10-24 to convene a June 2-4, 2025, conference addressing Israel’s illegal actions and establishing a Palestinian state within the framework of a two-state solution.
As EIR.News reported at the time, the July 2024 ICJ opinion directed Israel to “bring an end to its unlawful presence” in the OPT, to “cease immediately all new settlement activities, and evacuate all settlers from” the territories. Additionally, it called on all Geneva Convention signatory states to comply with these findings by ending any support for Israel’s occupation. Due to humanitarian law obligations, Israel was ordered to protect and provide natural resources and ensure an adequate supply of food and water. As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights so blatantly violated humanitarian norms, resulting in widespread devastation, the ICJ opinion directed that Israel be held accountable.
The heavily Zionist-funded NGO UN Watch has already issued a statement questioning the legitimacy of the upcoming UNGA conference, claiming it violates the Oslo Accords. However, UN Watch’s true concern is that the conference is mandated to implement the ICJ’s 2024 ruling. To its frustration, Palestinian representative to the UN Riyad Mansour has stated that he plans to work with member states to ensure that the conference acts upon the ICJ ruling ordering an end to Israel’s occupation.
In adopting the September 2024 resolution to convene this conference, the UNGA explicitly called for the implementation of relevant UN resolutions concerning Palestine and the establishment of a two-state solution to achieve a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. Helga Zepp-LaRouche, founder of the Schiller Institute and initiator of the International Peace Coalition, has emphasized that the ongoing war in Gaza is the “most urgent and intolerable” crisis, urging global citizens to work toward placing the two-state solution on the table alongside the Oasis Plan. She has further called for broader international support to ensure the Oasis Plan is included in the agenda of the June UN conference.
To achieve lasting peace in the region, Zepp-LaRouche asserts that a “completely new element” must be introduced—namely, the Oasis Plan—not just for Gaza, but as a transformative initiative encompassing the entirety of Southwest Asia, from India to the Mediterranean, from the Caucasus to the Gulf States. This strategy, she explains, would focus on economic development and infrastructure, particularly freshwater projects, to significantly improve living conditions across the region. She envisions this effort as aligned with the historic role of Southwest Asia as a hub connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe along the Old Silk Road, offering a vision of a brighter future for this deeply troubled part of the world.
