China’s New Smartphone Shocking the World

Sept. 4, 2023 (EIRNS)—China’s Huawei released its new smartphone, the Mate 60 last week, as we reported at the time. It’s release has continued to send shockwaves around the world, as its lightning-fast speeds are competitive with the other top models. This indicated that China had bypassed the trade barriers on semiconductor sales which had tried to cripple China’s high-tech sectors.

On Sept. 4, Bloomberg News announced that they had done a teardown in collaboration with TechInsights of the new Huawei phone, and found it to have a brand new 7nm chip inside, rapidly approaching the most advanced chips in the world. As Bloomberg noted, no one thought Huawei or SMIC, the Chinese manufacturer of the new 7nm chip, had anywhere near the capability to make such a device. The trade barriers imposed by the U.S. were intended to block any equipment that would allow China to have access to chips of 14nm or less, and SMIC itself was thought to only be capable of making 28nm chips—so this is an explosive surprise.

As we noted earlier, the imposition of trade barriers in an attempt to contain China’s development will only harm those Western companies who are banned from access to Chinese trade, while China is showing all indications that it will have no problem in bypassing such efforts.
