NY Times Attempts To Downplay BRICS Meeting

Aug. 24, 2023 (EIRNS)—In a couple of articles published Tuesday and Wednesday marking the only mention of the tremendous BRICS summit in South Africa, the newspaper tries it’s best to minimize anything of import happening at the BRICS, while at the same time admitting that there is remarkable interest from around the world. What is that interest, you might ask? It’s simple: desperate quests for new relationships on the one hand, and a combination of “[t]he war in Ukraine, the prospect of a major BRICS expansion and heightened tensions between China and the United States [that] have drawn unusual attention to the meeting.”

China wants “to shore up its own influence, while an isolated Russia needs new allies as it digs in for a protracted war in Ukraine.” India and Brazil are caught in the middle, still wanting to maintain their “strong alliances among industrialized nations,” and South Africa is caught up in “diplomatic challenges.” “But the nations in the group have very different interests, making common ground difficult to find,” one article writes.

Not surprisingly, no mention is made of the substance of the discussion at the summit, only a few short remarks which either spin “divisions” in the group, or attempt to generate the view that Russia and China are virulently anti-West. The simple strategy they employ, of course, is to repeat their narrative, and not include any real quotes!
