Global Times Editorial on China’s Role in History

Sept. 5—The Global Times editorial following the historic Sept. 3 celebration of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan presented an overview of the nation’s historic rise over the past century:

“Over the course of 80 years, this once-poor, war-torn nation has become the world’s second-largest economy. All of this was achieved through self-reliance and arduous struggle. The principle of ‘people first’ is manifested in targeted poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. Peace commitments extend beyond rhetoric to overseas infrastructure and development cooperation, strengthening South-South collaboration in a multipolar world.

“While capabilities have evolved, the declared purpose remains unchanged: China aims to prevent, not provoke war; to counter external interference and achieve reunification; and to contribute more significantly to global peace.”

On relations with the U.S., they write that despite strains, "external turbulence cannot deter China from following its chosen path. China’s door is opening wider. China cooperates through development and security initiative frameworks while advancing Belt and Road projects, deepening win-win cooperation concepts.

“The parade’s signals remain consistent: a defensive national defense policy, a no-first-use nuclear stance, and integrated security-development planning. The underlying logic can be traced back to wartime: Only with reliable capabilities can nations defend peace, prevent war and create space for growth and exchange.”

Another editorial selects quotes from President Xi Jinping’s speech at the reception: “At all times, we must advocate the common values of humanity, resolutely defend international fairness and justice, and ensure righteousness prevails and brightness shines in our world. At all times, we must always commit to the path of peaceful development, stay resolved to safeguard global peace and tranquility, and work together to build a community with a shared future for humanity. At all times, our hearts must be with the people, our work must be for the people, and we must do our best to improve the well-being of all the people.”
